About the show

Dyslexia Journey is for the parent who has just heard the word “dyslexia” and doesn’t know what happens next — and for the dyslexic adult who has known for years and is still looking for people who get it.

If you’re a parent, we cover the things that are hard to find clear answers on: how evaluation actually works, what to ask for at a school meeting, which reading approaches have evidence behind them, and how to keep a kid’s confidence intact while all of it is going on. Alongside that we interview psychologists, educators and reading specialists.

If you’re dyslexic yourself, this is a place for community and connection as much as strategy. Our Dyslexic Voices series — 13 episodes and counting — is given over entirely to dyslexic people talking about what school actually felt like, what they wish someone had told them, and what genuinely helped. Many of them weren’t identified until adulthood.

The show started in 2022 and has published 141 episodes since, with a new one every two weeks. Every episode has a free, searchable transcript on this site.

The hosts

Sonja

Co-host · Children's book author

Children's book author Sonja K Solter spent her childhood summers in her mother's homeland of Finland and traveled the world extensively with her family. She read so voraciously as a child that she once brought over 70 books on a trip. (Her mother is still trying to figure out how that slipped by her.)

Sonja graduated with an interdisciplinary degree in Human Biology from Stanford University and has an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University. Her master's critical thesis was on writing trauma in middle grade and young adult realistic fiction.

She is currently a creative writing mentor to youth for the Society of Young Inklings, and enjoys writing poetry and prose for children of all ages. She has also been a Music Together® director and teacher, where she especially enjoyed the collaborative improvisation aspect of the program.

He is the founder of Nimbus Peak Solutions, LLC and the Nimbus Migraine Tracker.

Together, Sonja and Nick are the parents of two adult children, one dog, one cat, and two rabbits. They live near Boulder, Colorado, where they especially enjoy hiking among the pine trees.
